Logan Kart 8 Deluxe Update 2.1 Is Here

The Logan Kart 8 Version 2.1 update has arrived! It's here to bring some slight changes and additions to your Logan Kart experience.

New Features!

  • Anarchy Mode! It's basically 315cc with some tweaks designed for chaos.
  • Variable race length! As mentioned earlier in the devlog. Also available in Grand Prix, due to the results of the poll.
  • Android version is back (use at your own risk)!

Changes!

  • Physics changes of which I don't remember all the specifics!
  • Item tweaks!
  • Vehicles fly higher in the air when hit by items!
This is going to be the last update for a while, and possibly ever. However, I said the same thing about 2.0, so anything is possible. Perhaps even Logan Kart 9. Logan Kart X. A spiritual successor. Who knows. But I need a break. See y'all later.

Logan Kart 8 Update 2.1: The Seventh Class

Some people want to go even faster. Some people want no item balance whatsoever. And some people just want to break the game. If any of these sound familiar, I have just the thing for you. Introducing Logan Kart 8: Anarchy Mode.

This "game mode" is technically the seventh class, after M300cc, but it has several differences that distinguish it from all other speed classes:

  • Slightly faster than 300cc
  • Most out of bounds / reset zones are disabled
  • Different item distributions

How different are these item distributions? In Anarchy mode, the four item modes behave as follows:

  • None - No items.
  • Normal - Same item distribution in every place 1st through 8th, with some items being rarer than others.
  • Boring - Same item distribution as "Crazy" in other speed classes.
  • Crazy - Same item distribution in every place 1st through 8th, with every unique item equally weighted.

In addition, unlike the "Race Length" option, this mode is selectable in Time Trials. Not only is it much faster than 180cc time trials, but in Anarchy mode item boxes are present. Accordingly, Anarchy records will be separate.

This mode is completely optional and is just supposed to be an additional feature for serious (or non-serious, I suppose) players that is distinct from the "regular" speeds. Some people have requested a "classic" physics mode in the past that behaves differently from the main game, so I think this is a suitable compromise (indeed, physics in 2.1, especially in Anarchy mode, are slightly different, too).

If you have any feedback or suggestions, please leave a comment. I want to make sure that 2.1 has enough Logan Kart 8 for everyone!

Announcing Logan Kart 8 Deluxe Update 2.1

I was originally going to release a small patch called 2.0.1, but due to some lukewarm reception and a sudden desire to add additional features, this patch is going to be bumped to a minor feature andbugfix update. There will be some significant changes in v2.1 to many aspects of gameplay, some that people asked for, some that people didn’t ask for, and some that may be considered a compromise.

Starting with the things that people didn’t ask for, here is a new feature coming to update 2.1: a “Race Length” option in VS mode:

This option controls the number of laps in each race, and it has six settings:
  • Single - Every race is one lap, that’s it.
  • Short - Reduced lap counts across the board (e.g. 2 laps instead of 3)
  • Normal - The standard race length.
  • Long - For extended races (e.g. 5 laps instead of 3).
  • Marathon - I wouldn’t recommend this at speeds slower than 180cc.
  • Random - The number of laps is chosen randomly from one of the five options above for each race (don’t worry - it’s weighted).
Marathon mode is so ridiculous that I had to redesign the end-of-race lap time screen and lap counter for some tracks. If you want to dodge your way through 5 minutes of Roundabout, this is the mode for you.

The feature is already complete, but what I want to know from you guys is if you’d like to see this option available in Grand Prix mode as well (it definitely won’t be in Time Trials). I’ve set up a poll on the Game Jolt Page regarding this question.

Take care, fellow Logankarters.

The Faces of Logan Kart: Part 1

The character roster of Logan Kart 8 Deluxe features nine characters in total, with eight unlocked by default.  Some of these characters are unchanged from the original game:

Whereas others are quite similar to their classic counterparts. For example, take Walogan and Wogan:

And finally, there are some new faces in the Logan Kart character lineup. I won't reveal them all today, but here is one of them (you may recognize this guy from the label for a certain brand of Custard Delights):

That's all for now, stay tuned for more updates (and maybe the rest of the roster).

Rejected Ideas Cup: Motel 4

Introducing Logan Kart 8 Deluxe's first new track: Motel 4. "Motel 4" was last seen in Logan Kart's level select screen in version 0.4. Dated January 2015, this version was never released to the public.

What the track select screen looked like in version 0.4
The track itself had never actually been created, and was replaced by Offshore Platform in later release versions. But today, this unused stage is getting its chance in the limelight. Taking place in a big neon hotel set against a gloomy starscape, Motel 4 now has a home as stage two of the Rejected Ideas Cup.

Logan Kart 8 Deluxe: Survey Results and Commentary

Thanks to all of you that participated in the Logan Kart survey. Now it's time to present the results, as well as some commentary regarding your responses.

1. How do you feel about the current GUI / HUD?

A plurality (44%) expressed content with the current UI, although desire for tweaks to aesthetics or usability was quite common. Only 3 responses were in favor of a UI overhaul.

Logan Kart was built using the old, pre-Unity 5 UI system so at the moment it isn't worth porting the whole mess to something that looks better. That being said, some tweaks have been made to the navigation of the menu already that should hopefully reduce confusion in navigation in some menus.

2. What changes should be made to the game's physics?

The results for this question were fairly evenly split, with about equal amounts preferring "no change" and "major change," and a plurality choosing "minor change."

I can confirm the vehicle physics in Deluxe are different than classic Logan Kart 8. While the underlying systems are quite similar to before, acceleration has been increased on higher speed classes and the bounciness of vehicles has been reduced. It is also now possible to rotate your vehicle in midair to help avoid the aftermath of a poorly landed jump. All of these changes are still under testing, however, and may change before release, since some new problems have emerged.

These changes are the primary reason behind the new speed class names (60, 120, 180... to differentiate and separate them from classic Logan Kart and its old physics), but if people don't like this it can be reverted before release.

3. Stars. They kinda suck.

Nobody wants to get a star in Logan Kart because they suck. Most of you wanted the star to suck a little less, and a good chunk (more than 25%) wanted entirely new star behavior.

Good news, the stars are indeed now immune to explosions! The physics engine doesn't want to cope with any sort of "push other carts out of the way" mechanic, however, so while the star will do more than it does now, it still won't be unstoppable.

4. What current item needs the most fixing?

Oh dear. Google Forms does not handle these short response questions too well. I was expecting some one- or two-word responses, but some of you wrote entire sentences, and the software spit out a very unhelpful chart. I think every item got at least one vote, but most people wanted changes in the star and a certain blue item that targets the leader of the race. Most of the requests here fall in the "bug fix" category, so hopefully the items should be a little bit more predictable. In general.

5. The Essay Question.
"Please add a restart button to time trials."
Yes (Improving time trials is planned and partially implemented already).

"Add luggy and Mayro"

No (Logan Kart 8 Deluxe is a certified no-meme zone. OK, not really, but still no).

"Was this game made with asset store stuff?"
No.

"Three is no low end:("
I have no idea what this means.

Some of you guys are really torn about physics:

"The physics are incredibly broken"
"More wacky physics"

Thrown into the mix were a lot of duplicate requests, things that are now in the game, or responses that reflected a desire for new content (as addressed in the second section of the survey).

6. Which of these four would you like to see more of most? (Characters, Karts, Items, Tracks)

Tracks won with 48%, and indeed that's the focus for Deluxe. Not as many wanted items or karts. The number of items will be the same but some of them will have re-skins and behave differently, and the vehicle selection will be completely unchanged other than perhaps some graphical updates.

Part of this is I'm too lazy to expand the selection screen beyond the current roster of nine. However, there will definitely be some new characters to replace the you-know-whos.

7. Which would you most like to see added into the game? (More content, battle mode, hold two items, etc.)

"More content" won with a majority (54%), so as stated before that's definitely an area of focus along with the bugfixes and physics and usability tweaks.

Five of you wanted the ability to hold two items, so while this is a possibility, it is not high on the priority list. It is the same with battle mode, although that came in second with 17% of the votes. I've been thinking about incorporating battle-mode-like mechanics into regular races (like a health/damage mechanic) but that may be too radical a gameplay change and will likely be excluded or at the very most optional.

So the focus will be more content, battle mode, and then two items, in that order, for the time being, but I wouldn't expect to see the latter two in Logan Kart 8 (Logan Kart 9 here we come?). As for someone's "story mode" and another's "online multiplayer," both of these are beyond the scope of this project.

8. The Other Essay Question

"unlockable [characters and tracks]"
Probably not, unfortunately.

"make intentional shortcuts"
I won't be rearranging any of the old tracks, but some of the new tracks definitely have some interesting design features.

"add purely random items setting for VS mode"
Oh boy. Are you sure you want this?

"Add sound effects. Either there's not many or they're just that quiet to not recognize them."
I admit the sound effects are lacking. This is not a huge priority but it's something I'm definitely considering.

"Melancholy Damp Area"
Sorry, no "Synonym Cup" this time around, although one of the new tracks will be quite miserable.

"Give the characters their own unique advantages"
Yes, this is something I'm considering, since right now the only difference between characters is their mass, which doesn't affect driving too much.

"I wrote my other suggestions the last eight times i took this survey"
Don't you have something better to do?

That's a wrap! Stay tuned for more Logan Kart updates, hopefully at least on a weekly basis until release.

Logan Kart's Fifth Cup

Today I am proud to vaguely announce a headline feature coming to Logan Kart 8 Deluxe:

See it on the right? With the addition of the "Rejected Ideas Cup," the total track count for LK8D at release will be 20. The stages in this cup are based on concepts that never materialized into full tracks during development and are now getting their chance to shine. While specifics for the new levels cannot be shown yet, I'll gradually release more information about them and other new content on this blog as well as on the Game Jolt devlog throughout the month.

Regarding July's survey: I was going to close it down but since responses continue to flow in on a daily basis, I'll keep it open for at least another week. After it is closed, I'll post the results as well as some development updates as they pertain to your responses.

I'm still really bad at predicting release dates; the best I can do is "summer." Hopefully that means August.

Logan Kart 8 Deluxe: The Survey

I want to hear from you guys what y'all want in the next Logan Kart. Formalize the process a little bit.

You can take the survey here.

Maybe I'll make more of these. Who knows?
